African Wild Dog rug by Cassandra-Leopardess African Wild Dog rug by Cassandra-Leopardess
I made this rug using an unusual calico goat rug that I got from :iconlittledovahelf: And I made the head and tail out of faux fur which I airbrushed since I could not find any fox/coyote faces that matched and real fur is much harder to dye than faux fur.
In person the faux fur blends very well with the real fur but in the photo it does not blend so well due to my cameras flash =P

For people who don't read decryptions THIS IS NOT A REAL AFRICAN WILD DOG PELT. It is a modified goat rug. And its not for sale.

I work on a sheep station near broken hill and we muster feral goats as well... Today, we mustered a few and one of them would be prefect for this kind of thing! maybe a little smooth coated, but markings would be perfect. If she makes it to the yards (we often loose a handful due to the incompetence of the people I work with....) ill definatly be eating her and taking her skin!

Saw her again today but she didn't look as much like a wild dog from the other side.... Too much white but will still make a nice pelt! A shame because I would have loved to commission a fake head and tail! One day we might bring in another one that looks more like it... That's the joy of mustering goats, you never know what cool stuff you'll find!

The head looks so real! Good job =] I was going to make a faux thylacine rug, but ended up with a zebra duiker pelt which looks close enough!

Thank you so much! I think that's cool that you got a zebra duiker pelt. often their pelts get confused with Tasmanian tiger pelts :D

I was surprised when I heard that. Back when i was a child I watched African docus quite often and as far as I remember they were not endangered at that time yet. I wonder what happened to them. :(
They are indeed very interesting, the fur coat alone makes them unique.

Yeah I have no idea how they became so endangered and I don't think they were hunted too much as I have never seen a real African wild dog pelt but I have only seen just a few taxidermy mounts of them.

I guess if they got poached then maybe not because of the fur but more because they are a 'pest' to farmers like lions and other bigger carnivores because in some areas lions became extinct because farmers kill them.
I guess when they do that they donīt use their fur because it is not worth much.

That's true. Cheetahs are often killed by farmers for killing their live stock. I just hope this amazing species never goes extinct :(
